How to Get Your MC Authority and Start as an Owner-Operator

To get your MC authority, you register your trucking business with the FMCSA to obtain a USDOT number and MC (motor carrier) number, secure the required insurance, file a BOC-3 process agent form, and complete your carrier setup. Once your authority is active and insurance is filed, you can start booking your own loads. The process usually takes a few weeks, mostly waiting on the FMCSA's mandatory review period.

The basic steps to your own authority

1. Form your business. Set up your business entity (many owner-operators use an LLC) and get an EIN from the IRS.

2. Register with the FMCSA. Apply for your USDOT number and operating authority (MC number) through the FMCSA. This is the core registration that lets you operate as a carrier.

3. Get the required insurance. You'll need the liability and cargo coverage the FMCSA requires. Your insurance company files proof with the FMCSA, which is part of activating your authority.

4. File your BOC-3. This designates a process agent in each state — a required filing, usually handled quickly through a service.

5. Wait out the FMCSA review period. After you apply, there's a mandatory waiting period before your authority becomes active. This is often the longest part.

6. Set up to haul. Once active, set up your carrier packets with brokers, arrange factoring if you want faster payment, and line up your first loads.
